The hepatitis D virus is a virusoid. This means that it cannot replicate on its own and requires the coat of the hepatitis B virus. For this reason, hepatitis D only occurs together with hepatitis B.

Who does hepatitis D affect?

Only people with a hepatitis B infection can become infected with hepatitis D. It is uncommon in Switzerland.

The hepatitis B vaccine also protects against infection with hepatitis D.

A blood sample is examined to identify an infection.

How is hepatitis D treated?

The addition of a hepatitis D infection often makes a hepatitis B infection more severe. Antiviral therapy is recommended for those infected with hepatitis B and D.
